Veteran trees, those of significant age, size or biological value — require a very different approach to standard tree surgery. Their value lies precisely in the features that might concern a less experienced contractor: hollow stems, dead wood, decaying cavities, and irregular structure. These characteristics provide irreplaceable habitat for bats, birds, invertebrates and fungi, and must be preserved wherever possible rather than removed.
We have considerable experience in the sensitive management of veteran and ancient trees, working to retain as much of the living canopy and deadwood habitat as the tree’s condition and safety requirements allow. Our approach follows current best practice guidance from the Arboricultural Association and Natural England, and all works are carried out with an understanding of the ecological significance of the trees in our care.
